Phonics
Read Write Inc. Phonics
The school teaches systematic phonics using Read Write Inc., which was developed by Ruth Miskin. This framework provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching early reading. This method of reading helps children to learn the relationships between the sounds (phonemes) of spoken language and the letter symbols (graphemes) of the written language.
It is used by more than a quarter of the UK's primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
The programme has been throughout our school for the last 8 years and all of our staff are fully trained in delivering the scheme of learning. Staff have recently had refresher training in September 2024.
Read Write Inc. understands that for every child in our school to read successfully they need to have a strong phonic knowledge so that they are able to:
- recognise each of the graphemes
- decode and blend effortlessly
- read with fluency and expression
The children are introduced to sounds in their daily speed sound lessons and they are invited to blend words that contain that particular sound.
The books that accompany the programme contain the sounds that the children have been learning, and therefore, they ensure that the children can read the books and feel confident at reading.
Each week, the children take these books home to share their decoding skills with their parents. We also encourage them to choose another book to take home to ensure they are choosing texts they are interested in so that they can develop a love of reading.
We encourage parents to read with their children every night, throughout their time at primary school. The recommended reading lists below provide a range of titles that we are sure you will all enjoy!
