Black History Month at SWOY

This month children have been engaged in their topics for Black History Month. Each class has focused on a significant individual and we have included a brief summary of these individuals below.

Nursery

Hamza Ahmed Yassin was born in Sudan on 22 February 1990, Yassin moved to Northampton in the UK aged eight, not knowing any English. He is a British wildlife camera man and presenter, who is also known for his role as Ranger Hamza on CBeebies. He has worked on shows such as Country file and Animal Park, as well as presenting programmes about Scottish wildlife. In 2022, he won the twentieth series of the BBC contest Strictly Come Dancing.

Reception

The Reception children have had a great time exploring Maxi Priest's music, especially enjoying his song "Wild World." We encourage parents to check out the Maxi Priest mural near Brockley Rise the next time you're in the area!

Additionally, we've learned about Dina Asher-Smith and her achievements in British sprinting. She inspires us to keep persevering toward our goals and to maintain our faith even after a setback.

Yr1

Sona Jobarteh: Sona is a global musical icon from The Gambia. She is born to a family of Griots. The role and practices of Griots are embedded in West Africa's history and traditions. They are oral storytellers. Sona plays a traditional instrument called a kora and Year 1 will be finding out all about the instrument, its history and enjoying her music.

Yr2

We've been learning all about Marcus Rashford for Black History Month, focusing on the amazing work he does both on and off the pitch. From his incredible football skills to his inspiring efforts to fight child hunger and improve children's access to books, we've been exploring how he's making a positive impact in communities across the UK. Rashford shows us the power of using your voice and platform for good, and we're excited to celebrate everything he stands for this month!

Yr3

Yr3 have been busy learning about Mary Seacole this month. As a British-Jamaican nurse in the 1800s, her leadership and courage paved the way for diversity in nursing in the UK after she cared for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War. We have loved learning about her and look forward to sharing our fantastic art work with you when it is finished.

Yr4

For Black History Month, Year 4 class is studying Ade Adepitan. Ade is a Paralympian, TV presenter, and advocate for disability rights who overcame challenges after contracting polio as a child. By learning about his story, we will explore his perseverance, diversity, and the importance of inclusivity that lead him to being a pioneer. Ade Adepitan's journey shows us the power of embracing differences and striving to make a positive impact on the world.

Yr5

Dr Mae Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first African-American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. She is also a trained medical doctor, served as a Medical Officer in the Peace Corps and currently runs a medical technology company.
