PE

Aim

At St William of York we aim to make Physical Education (PE) active, engaging and fun! We follow a curriculum that allows children to build on their skills and ensures progression in different areas of PE. We encourage the children to live healthy and active lifestyles by teaching them the importance of exercise and the benefits of being active for sustained periods of time.

Coverage

The areas for learning in the PE curriculum are Sports, Athletics, Dance and Gymnastics. We use a scheme of learning called PE Planning to support to implementation and delivery of our PE curriculum. More information about our curriculum can be found in the curriculum map at the bottom of this page.

The range of lessons include:

  • Fitness
  • Rounders
  • Tennis
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Dodge ball
  • Orienteering
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Yoga
Swimming

All children will also have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons. We use Forest Hill Pools for our swimming lessons and these usually take place in Yr4 and Yr6. The National Curriculum requirement is for all pupils to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Platform Cricket

We work with external providers to supplement and enrich our PE curriculum. One of these providers is Platform Cricket, who aim to increase the number of children in London participating in cricket. The deliver in-school coaching programmes and run competitive inter-school festivals.

Milwall Football Club

Another partnership that we value is with Milwall Football Club. A specialist coach from the trust works with a focus year group for a block of lessons each year and works hard to engage pupils in developing their football skills. The children love having external coaches and are always excited to participate in these sessions. Pupils are also given opportunities to participate in inter-school competitions.
