Art & Design

Aim

At St William of York we are committed to providing a rich art and design curriculum that is reflective of the diversity in our community. We aim to inspire our children to be creative, engaged and challenged. We use art and design to enrich pupils' experiences of their class topics as we embrace teaching in a cross-curricular way. We believe that it is important to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to confidently create their own masterpieces. It’s our aim that by the time every child leaves primary school they can feel as if they have found an area of the visual arts that is relevant and engaging to them – that might be through drawing, or making, or designing, or talking about art.

Approach

Our art curriculum ensures that pupils have the opportunity to experience a range of different projects and media. We use AccessArt to guide our planning and teaching of Art and Design. The AccessArt primary art curriculum is designed around the idea that art is far more than a series of technical skills. It provides a holistic approach that nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure pupils learn through art, as well as about art.

Arts Award

At St William of York, we offer pupils the opportunity to take part in the Arts Award. The Arts Award takes children on a creative journey, exploring the arts world, discovering their potential as artists, developing leadership skills – and gaining a prestigious award along the way.

Bow Arts

We work in partnership with Bow Arts to enrich our art and design curriculum. This provides us with specialist artist time and our children benefit from their unique skills and talents. It is always inspirational for the children to see an artist in action and they learn a lot about the wealth of opportunities available to them as young artists.
