Geography

Aim 

At St William of York, we aim to provide a Geography curriculum that encourages pupils to be curious about the world around them. We foster an interest in both physical and human geography, and encourage children to reflect upon their place in our community. The curriculum is designed to ensure a progression of both knowledge and skills that can be transferred to other areas of the curriculum. We have a particular focus on developing children's language by delivering language-rich units of work. 

Approach

To support the delivery of the Geography Curriculum we use the Primary Knowledge Curriculum. The PKC aspires to create curious and knowledgeable young people, who hold a deep understanding and appreciation of the discipline of Geography, and are able to talk about their local environment, the community they live in and global issues. We have a strong focus on sustainability which is complemented by our work on the Sustainable Development Goals. We also work closely with the Foodbank to teach our children about the importance of social responsibility and supporting those in need in our local community. 

We teach topics in a cross-curricular way, and therefore, pupils will explore their geographical topics through their English lessons, art projects, science experiments and mathematical endeavours. 

Enrichment 

At St William of York, we aim to enhance pupils' learning experiences in geography through field trips and practical workshops. Each class aims to attend an educational trip or workshop every term, and this is often linked to history or geography topics.
